Glasstire Texas EditorJanuary 28, 2013Glasstire, the online journal of visual art, seeks an editor for its Texas website. About GlasstireGlasstire has been a pioneer online art criticism since 2001. We publish original content daily. Our mission is to transform art discourse in America by entertaining and challenging our readers with smart, timely, opinionated and readable art journalism.Position SummaryThe Texas Editor is responsible for all content on glasstire.com. The Texas Editor is based in Houston and is required to travel to other Texas cities, and occasionally to events in other states. Frequent attendance at evening and weekend art events is not only required but should be something the Editor enjoys doing. The successful candidate will be a strong and engaging writer with a solid background in contemporary art criticism, who shares the Glasstire editorial ethos of smart and readable art writing that is free of academic jargon, and who closely follows developments in contemporary art, both nationally and in Texas.This is an opportunity to build on Glasstire's history of 12 successful years, to shape its future as we grow our audience, and ultimately to participate in our expansion into other regions in the country. The successful candidate will have a clear vision for Glasstire's editorial future. They will be ambitious, entrepreneurial, and eager to help grow Glasstire into a national leader in arts journalism.Primary Responsibilities• Produce and oversee the creation of all Texas content on Glasstire.• Supervise all contributors, including other editors, writers, copy editor, photographers and videographers. Provide tips and other relevant information to the news editor and other staff as appropriate.• Foster a collaborative culture, managing a weekly story conference to develop ideas for new content with other editors.• Edit feature articles and reviews, working directly with writers. Review blogs and edit as necessary.• Ensure that existing writers and other staff are being coached to expand their skills and capabilities. At the same time recruit and cultivate new writers and other editorial staff as necessary, with the approval of the Executive Director. Hire and manage bloggers and train them in Wordpress. Provide basic technical assistance to bloggers as needed. • Create original material such as a bi-weekly blog (500-800 words) and monthly feature article (700-1500 words).• Write a weekly newsletter highlighting the past week's content.• Monitor the website seven days a week and oversee the site's comment approval system. Monitor site-wide functionality, notifying Executive Director and programmer of technical problems.• Assist the Executive Director with revenue generating activity: provide content information for grant writing purposes, attend fundraising events, and support donor cultivation.• Report on traffic, content, and new initiatives to the board of directors at 4-5 annual meetings.This position reports to the executive director.Qualifications• Bachelors degree and Masters or Masters-equivalent work experience required • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills• Strong track record of leadership • Minimum of 3 years prior writing and editorial experience required, preferably in publishing, with working knowledge of best journalism practices and SEO.• Must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and a self-starter. Glasstire does not maintain regular office hours, and the editor is expected to manage their own schedule to fulfill their responsibilities.• High-energy, outgoing individual who takes initiative and follows through • Solid computer skills. Familiarity with Wordpress, image editing and social media a plus.This is a full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience.
