Special Knowledge or Skills: Must be bilingual/bicultural -- able to communicate effectively both receptively and expressively in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English, and very knowledgeable of deaf culture. Competency of tactile interpretation. Must have excellent organizational skills. Competent knowledge of adaptive equipment for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as well as telecommunication equipment. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Highly computer literate. 3. Computer Literacy: Must have strong utilization skills of MS Office Suite; expert level Outlook and Excel skills. 4. Experience: Minimum 3 years serving as an interpreter and interacting with the deaf and hard of hearing community. 5. Supervisory Responsibilities: Responsible for providing leadership for all day to day operations of Deaf Services department in Baton Rouge office including any department assistant(s), staff interpreters, and contract interpreters. Ability to perform the responsibilities of the Deaf Services Manager in their absence. 6. Physical: Must be able to perform the necessary functions of the job, be able to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 35 pounds. Must be able to drive to outlying parishes in own vehicle. Proof of insurance and a valid driver's license required. 7. Personality Traits: Must have strong interpersonal skills and the patience and demeanor to provide all clients, including older adults, with quality and professional support at all times. Must display confidence in your interaction within the community, fellow staff members, and supervisors. 8. Community Outreach: Ability to teach the fundamentals of ASL to the hearing community through organized classes at The Lighthouse offices. Must present yourself in a professional manner for LCD equipment outreach, as well as Deaf advocacy within the community. 9. Working Conditions: Office and regional (SE Louisiana) travel capability. 10. Work Schedule: 40 hours/ week. 11.
